Alright, I promise I am not going to fuck this up like I did recently with Mortal Strike where I mistakenly called Austrians Australian and when I called Malokarpatan Slovenian when they are Slovakian. BattleX is an awesome traditional heavy metal influenced Thrash band from Slovenia.
There was a sound that thrash developed just before the accursed term half-thrash arrived in the early 90’s that derived after the turbulent 80’s thrash scene broke the speed of sound numerous times and was getting tired of that sound. The sound was a pure fusion of taking raw thrash and fusing it with the solid foundation of heavy metal. The first band I can name that is the easiest way to describe this sound is Holy Terror. After Holy Terror perfected this sound the early 80’s guys started to come to the heavy thrash fusion side, like Slayer‘s Seasons in the Abyss and Megadeth‘s Countdown to Extinction. Now you are probably sitting there thinking “yeah ok, I know this already but what the fuck does this have to do with BattleX?” BattleX‘s Imminent Downfall feels like a lost gem of that time and place in thrash, and sounds fucking great.
I have always felt like this was a dead sound that I would never hear revived due to the fact that everyone wants to sound like the 80’s guys. The 90’s sound has not been heard in quite some time unless you throw on an old Cyclone Temple album. I am very pleasantly surprised by BattleX with Imminent Downfall. There is a lot of building that creates a solid foundation and pinnacle upon this excellent album. If you were a fan of the sound of metal between 1989-1994, Imminent Downfall is right up your alley, and no when I say that I am not saying this is anywhere near a rip-off of the sound, it feels like a unique experience that just so happens to be a dead ringer of a timeless era in Thrash and Heavy Metal.
