Slayer’s “Reign in Blood” turns 30! No ratings yet.

Artist: Slayer Album: Reign in Blood Genre: Thrash Origin: America Year:1986
Artist: Slayer
Album: Reign in Blood
Genre: Thrash
Origin: America
Year:1986

The year was 1986 and the extreme’s of thrash metal were starting to be pushed to higher boundaries. With 2 albums already released, Slayer was already making a huge name for themselves. Though “Hell Awaits” was heavier and darker sounding that its predecessor, the iconic album “Reign in Blood” went even further down the same path, leaving an even bigger, if not the BIGGEST mark on metal history. Though the album is technically considered thrash metal, it should more importantly be considered as an album that hugely influenced the more extreme genres of metal, such as black and death metal. Without the blistering fast chromatic riffs written over lightning speed thrash beat drumming, you could easily see the early stages of death metal.  Given the same compositions, replacing Tom Araya’s thrash screams with some harsher sounding gutteral vocals, maybe even downtune the instruments to add icing on the cake, we would easily have a death metal album. We can use Monstrosity’s cover of Angel of Death for reference.

Listen To: Iron Maiden – Power Slave No ratings yet.

Widely regarded as the quintessential heavy metal album of all time, Iron Maiden‘s Power Slave is an album for the ages. There is not a single fan of music that has anything bad to say about this masterpiece. This is an essential album for all metal heads to own.

Nothing says NWOBHM quite like Iron Maiden. Power Slave is the album that defines this era and genre of music to a T. I believe I have seen more Power Slave shirts in my life than any other album or band shirt, yes even Metallica.

There is nothing in metal that is quite like Bruce Dickinson’s voice. Steve Harris’s Bass playing. The dueling guitars of Adrian Smith and Dave Murray. Nicko McBrain’s rhythm section.

So here it is for your listening pleasure, lets bask in this album’s 32 year reign of power. Let’s all be happy that in a wold of all this madness we have Iron Maiden to listen to. Iron Maiden will never go away, years from now people will look back on their catalog like we do Bach.

Long Live Iron Maiden, Iron Maiden Lives!
The Will Of Iron Never Dies.
Thank you for the years, though most of them were wasted.

Listen To: Emperor – In The Nightside Eclipse No ratings yet.

As an integral part of the second wave of black metal was Emperor. Bringing a new sound of operatic symphony to the genre, Emperor brought a new elegance to the once primitive nature of black metal. Emperor‘s 1994 full length album In The Nightside Eclipse is an extraordinary album that all metal heads and fans of excellent music in general should all consider and Essential Album.

It has been 22 years now since this album has been released, how do you feel In the Nightside Eclipse and Emperor changed black metal?

O’ mighty Lord of the Night. Master of beasts. Bringer of awe and derision.
Thou whose spirit lieth upon every act of oppression, hatred and strife.
Thou whose presence dwelleth in every shadow.
Thou who strengthen the power of every quietus.
Thou who sway every plague and storm.
Harkee.

Thou art the Emperor of Darkness.
Thou art the Emperor of Darkness.
Thou art the king of howling wolves.
Thou art the king of howling wolves.
Thou hath the power to force any light in wane.
Sans mercy. Sans compassion
nor will to answer whosoever asketh the why.

Thy path is capricious but yet so wide.
With no such thing as an impediment to strong.

Every time thou consecrate me to another secret of Thine,
I take another step towards Thy Pantheon.

Forever wilt I bleed for Thee.
Forever wilt I praise Thy dreaded name.
Forever wilt I serve Thee.
Thou shalt shalt forever prevail.

Coffin Lust‘s Manifestation of Inner Darkness  is expected to dig it’s way out of it’s tomb on Friday the 13th. Sick rotting death metal from the land down under. If all you think about Australia is the jokes about dingo’s eating babies, Crocodile Hunter and Dundee, and that delightfully funny episode of the Simpson’s where Bart successfully pisses off the whole country, you need to start listening to more Australian metal, start with Coffin Lust. Yes, I am aware that I am the one that always makes Australian jokes in the vain of everything I just said. Example.

Artist: Helmet Album: Meantime Genre: Heavy Metal/ Metalcore Year: 1992 Origin: U.S.A. Label: Interscope Records
Artist: Helmet
Album: Meantime
Genre: Heavy Metal/ Metalcore
Year: 1992
Origin: U.S.A.
Label: Interscope Records

Helmet was and always will be an underrated band, Meantime is a sick album that is not nu-metal like how a lot of people believe it to be. Helmet was, essentially, one of the first metalcore bands. Before that term got dirtied by the post-hardcore scene of the 2000’s metalcore was what it sounds like, heavy metal and hardcore mixed together. Unlike crossover thrash of the 80’s where it was about fusing thrash and hardcore, early metalcore was heavy metal and real hardcore. The scene of the 2000’s was like fusing glam metal to post-hardcore, making two shitty things into a fucking cesspool of fuckery. So instead of listening to that bullshit, Listen to Helmet‘s Meantime. So in May, listen to Helmet‘s Meantime.

Cannibal Corpse – Eaten Back To Life No ratings yet.

Cannibal corpse eaten back to life
Artist: Cannibal Corpse
Album: Eaten Back To Life
Genre: Death Metal
Year: 1990
Origin: originally Buffalo, NY; later Tampa, FL
Label: Metal Blade Records
Sounds Like: Your Skull Full of Maggots Being Mangled

Alright you primitive screwheads listen up! Chris Barnes is the only reason this band ever existed. Corpsegrinder gets all this stupid credit for this band he does not deserve. Cannibal Corpse was popular before him and way better. Here is my reasoning.

The 80’s death metal scene was ran by the Florida sound but in 1990 Cannibal Corpse changed it all. Cannibal Corpse brought the New York sound to the populous of the metal community, the same sound that Suffocation added brutality to on their debut EP Human Waste the following year. Chris Barnes was the biggest influential member Cannibal Corpse had. Without his comedic, gory, sarcastic approach to lyrics presented with some of the greatest growls ever, death metal would not have ever spawned brutal bands. Cannibal Corpse’s Eaten Back to Life was a new visioning of the future of death metal.

Cannibal Corpse with Barnes was a pot smoking, no holds barred, screw being good let’s just be heavy, death metal band. Eaten Back to Life is a prime example of that mentality. This album is just heavy, and became the architecture so to speak that the 90’s extreme metal bands used. This is the album that I use as an example to differentiate between a “metal” fan and a metalhead, when I hear maggot I don’t think of Slipknot I think of the most memorable death metal lyrics of all time that all metalheads know. Which I might add Corpsegrinder does not have any memorable chanting lyrics. Which lyrics am I speaking of? Well if maggot didn’t give it away here you go.

Maggots beginning to feast.

Maggots crawling on you.
Maggots, now they eat you.

Maggots, rotting maggots.
Maggots infesting your corpse.

Maggots, parasites of the dead.
Maggots now dwell in your head.

Irony ensued is this. Barnes is subliminally a huge impact on death metal in that Corpsegrinder is the voice of Adult Swim television show Metalocalpse’s death metal band Dethklok… Why is it that they use a Six Feet Under, another Chris Barnes band, album art as the band’s mascot? Because Chris Barnes was part of and the only reason Cannibal Corpse exists. Like it or not Chris Barnes’ fronted Cannibal Corpse changed death metal with Eaten Back to Life.

On a side note Barnes was in Ace Ventura and has made a death metal song featuring Ice-T. Corpsegrinder has not.  Take a listen to Eaten Back to Life again. It has not lost its awesome it has just acquired more casket rot over the years.
